Judo Championships - Australian Master Games,
Geelong 2009

On the 27th and 28th of
February, Geelong hosted the Australian Master Games
Judo Championships. On the Friday the Kata
competition was held, this is a demonstration of the
formal and technical aspects of Judo in a
pre-arranged format. This was followed on the
Saturday by the fighting competition. Competitors
from all over Australia and overseas competed in a
friendly but very competitive atmosphere that made
for an enjoyable championships. “The Masters Games
concept is a great opportunity to compete as you get
older and at the same time rub shoulders with ex
Olympians and National champions”, commented local
Judo instructor David Nabulsi.
The
Traralgon Judo Club proved to be very competitive,
winning 3 Gold Medals, and 3 Silver Medals. On the
Friday, Paul Coughlan & Hunter Richardson won Silver
in the 40 – 50 year old Free-Form Kata competition.
On the Saturday the fighting competition was held
with Paul & Hunter competing in the middle weight
40–50 age group. With Hunter winning Gold and Paul
winning a hard fought Silver after fighting through
an additional three fights in the repechage. In the
Heavy Weight 40–50 age group David Nabulsi won Gold
after defeating 4 consecutive opponents. Both David
& Hunter entered the open weight competition for
their age group, which David won Gold on points over
competitors which included Judoka from Perth and
Scotland.
